Dave Berg is the vice president of product strategy at Drishti. He is a seasoned executive with more than two decades of experience in transforming technical companies from brand-building through development to acquisition. Dave excels at crafting product vision and strategy with a refined roadmap based on co-design and innovative efforts. As VP of product strategy, Dave steers Drishti’s product vision and refines its product roadmap based on these philosophies. Dave is based in Chicago.
Dave is the “employee spotlight” of the month and has gone candid in answering our questions. From his admiration for Albert Einstein’s work to his love of math and his sincere advice to parents about managing sleep, Dave speaks about it all.
Manasi KG: If Dave Berg was not into products, which other field would he have chosen?
Dave Berg: Mathematics. I have a passion for solving problems using creativity and logic. Ever since I was little, math has been an outlet for me to organize and make sense of the world around me. I adore the elegance in a well-constructed proof and the uncertainty in statistical models.
MK: What early learnings have supported you throughout your professional career?
DB: First, follow the value. Early in my career, I was asked to take on a lot of responsibilities quite fast. With responsibility for a range of functions, I needed to find a way to make sense of the body of work. I figured out that focusing on what value our customers would get was an effective way to understand and prioritize my work. That helped me come up with creative ways to accomplish my goals, while opportunistically creating additional value.
Also, at Drishti, we have a policy of refusing work when you don’t understand how it aligns with our corporate goals. That is a good example of “following the value,” and another reason I enjoy being a part of the team here.
MK: You’ve had an affiliation with mathematics and IoT throughout your career. How does that background help your work at Drishti?
DB: My experience with mathematics, IoT, and the patent I authored, ”Systems and Methods for Improving Employee Performance,” all gave me a head start with the domain. What helped even more was the brilliant team at Drishti and the culture of willingness to try new things. We have work to do to further harden our solution, increase scalability and continue to drive innovation. With this team and culture, I am excited and confident we will be able to realize our dreams.
MK: In an ideal world, how does Dave Berg spend a free Saturday afternoon?
DB: Saturday afternoons in our home are dedicated to family time. That usually means an activity with our kids, followed by me preparing dinner for everyone. I love to cook and I love to spend time with our kids, so it’s a perfect combination.
MK: As the father of two kids, what advice do you have for parents trying to balance work and life?
DB: As the father of two young children — and one more due in September 2022 — my advice is twofold. First, forget about sleep. You can survive on less than you think. Second, do your best and it will be good enough.
MK: Who is someone you have always wanted to meet (living or deceased) and why?
DB: Albert Einstein. I have always admired how he balanced his intellectual curiosity with his love for life. I’d also love the opportunity to ask him about his work and many of his inspirations.
